Ingredients

  • 1 lb of ground beef
  • 1 tbsp of salted butter
  • 1 packet of french onion soup mix
  • 1 10.5 oz can of condensed French onion soup
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp of garlic powder
  • 8 oz of egg noodles
  • 8 slices of provolone cheese
  • 1/3 cup of crispy fried onions

Instructions

  • Step 1: Brown the beef - Start by heating a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and let it cook until it is nicely browned. Try not to stir it too quickly at first. Letting it sit for a minute helps build that deeper flavor. Once it is cooked through, drain off any excess grease. Add the butter and let it melt right into the beef.
  • Step 2: Build the flavor base - Add the French onion soup mix, condensed French onion soup, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. Stir everything together until it is well combined. This is where the magic starts. You will notice the smell change almost immediately into something rich and comforting.
  • Step 3: Cook the noodles - Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then add the egg noodles. Reduce the heat to a simmer and let everything cook for about 8 to 10 minutes. Stir occasionally so the noodles cook evenly and do not stick to the bottom. The noodles will soak up the broth and become tender while the sauce thickens.
  • Step 4: Add the cheese and finish - Once the noodles are tender and most of the liquid has absorbed, lay the provolone cheese slices over the top. Cover the skillet with a lid and let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes until the cheese is melted. Finish by sprinkling the crispy fried onions over the top. If you like, you can add a bit of parsley for color. Serve it warm and enjoy every bite.

Notes

Substitutions

  • Ground turkey instead of beef: This works well if you want a lighter option while still keeping great flavor.
  • Mozzarella instead of provolone: Mozzarella melts nicely and gives a slightly milder cheesy taste.
  • Chicken broth instead of beef broth: This will change the flavor slightly but still keeps the dish delicious.
  • Fresh onions instead of soup mix: You can caramelize sliced onions for a more homemade flavor if you have extra time.

Variations

  • Add mushrooms: Sliced mushrooms bring an earthy flavor that pairs perfectly with the onion base.
  • Make it spicy: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little heat.
  • Extra cheesy version: Mix in shredded cheese along with the slices for an even richer finish.
  • Herb boost: Add fresh thyme or parsley to brighten up the dish.

Tips and Tricks

  • Let the beef brown properly: Giving it a minute before stirring helps build a deeper richer flavor.
  • Stir the noodles occasionally: This keeps them from sticking and ensures they cook evenly.
  • Watch the liquid level: If it looks too dry before the noodles are done, add a splash of broth.
  • Use a lid for melting cheese: Covering the skillet helps the cheese melt quickly and evenly.

Serving Ideas

  • With a side salad: A simple green salad balances out the richness of the dish.
  • With crusty bread: Perfect for soaking up any extra sauce left in the skillet.
  • With roasted vegetables: Adds a nice contrast and rounds out the meal.

Storage and Make Ahead Tips

  • Refrigerate leftovers: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 2 to 3 days.
  • Reheat gently: Warm it on the stove or in the microwave with a splash of broth to keep it from drying out.
  • Make ahead option: You can cook the beef and sauce ahead of time, then add noodles when ready to serve.
